Lately I’ve been eating my way around Brooklyn, and spending long afternoons in Prospect Park, but New York’s other great pastime – shopping! - can’t be beat along Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn.
Boerum Hill is a tiny brownstone neighborhood just south of Brooklyn Heights (and probably best known as the former home of Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams). Its main thoroughfare, Atlantic Avenue, has become a chic main street to the tony adjacent ‘hoods with its new Barney’s Co-op, Jonathan Adler, Steve Alan and, more importantly, tons of cool, locally owned boutiques. Here are a few shops with great design (and – I couldn’t resist – a place to stop for a bite).
SHOP: Greenhouse
Eco-chic home shop (above) filled with luxury linens, ceramics and furniture all with earthy textures, clean design and muted colors.
What I Wanted: Mud Ceramics bowls is soft pink and gray, Yoshi hand towels and Libeco linen sheets.
SHOP: Eva Gentry Consignment
Great designer consignment shop filled with all sorts of gems.
What I Wanted: Mark Jacobs ivory bag, Prada hot pink suede heels.
SHOP: Layla
Beautiful shop (left) with colorful Indian textiles (towels, sheets, shams), tunics the owner designs and lovely gold jewelry, some antique, some the owner designs.
What I Want: The delicate, gold chandelier earings.
SHOP: Malia Mills
Amazing retro-inspired swim suits and accessories in cool colors. Fit great, looked great and I love that they use real customers to model their suits.
What I Wanted: Starlet hatler one-piece in black (although I wish it came in their awesome eggplant color) or Dionne shirred one-piece, which does come in the eggplant.
SHOP: Acorn
The cutest kids shop that ever was (left) with an eco-fairy-woodlands feel. Wooden toys, fabric tents, European-style kids clothes, fabric mobiles, custom art.
What I Wanted: Fuchsia wool, German-style hat, silver leather maryjane shoes, mushroom nightlight.
EAT: Building on Bond
Architects designed and opened this cool coffee shop/bar/cafe. Its recycled, eco-industrial-schoolhouse looks like it’s been pieced together artfully from the scraps. They’ve got a DJ station with records, free wi-fi (so its great spot to sit and do some work), and strong coffee. The ideal late afternoon stop after shopping. Plus, it’s two-blocks from where Heath and Michelle lived so you can see how the celebs live in Brooklyn after your latte.
What I Got: Coffee. Ahh…
